About this data
Values are the Zillow Observed Rent Index (ZORI, smoothed) for multifamily
buildings of 5+ units — apartments — across 622 U.S. metro areas.
ZORI tracks the typical asking rent on new listings, not what every tenant currently pays,
so it runs ahead of rents under existing leases. Each metro is one figure, placed at its
Census-defined centroid; the July value of each year is shown.
The colored surface is an interpolation — inverse-distance weighting of
the 8 nearest metros. Color between metro points is estimated, not measured, and fades out
where the nearest metro is more than about 200 km away. Read exact figures from the
tooltip or the table.
